The English took over of the area that had been called "New Netherland" in 1664, and renamed it New York to honor the Duke of York (York is a city in England).

Upstate Vs. Downstate
Upstate is technically everywhere outside of the NYC metro area. Downstate is all of the NYC boroughs and Long Island with Westchester. 
One thing Upstaters do agree on is that NYC is in no way representative of New York State. The people in NYC just respond with, “There’s life beyond NYC?”
