Games with a small ball, which by means of devices such as racket interrupted over the net, were known in ancient times in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. In the Middle Ages and in modern times in Europe had a spread of the game, which can be regarded as immediate precursors of tennis. This is primarily English "field-tennis", "court tennis," as well as games, "Long-pom" and "Kurt-pom," Cultivated mainly in France, Spain and Italy.

In 1874, Englishman Wingfield has developed new rules fairly close to the modern tennis game, which he called "sferistikoy." 
In 1875, these rules have been improved, and the game got a new name - "lawn tennis" ("lawn" - in English "lawn"). In accordance with the International Tennis Federation in 1875 and is considered the year of the modern game of tennis.

Now tennis has gained popularity and spread throughout the world. At major international tournaments going large number of participants and spectators. The strongest players in the world, speakers at this event, physically well-trained, athletic, have a lightning-fast response, excellent mobility and dexterity. They are powerfully and accurately, in an attacking style. They are characterized by a subtle sense of game situations and continuous work.

The main major international competitions - it's open championship of Australia, France, Britain and the United States. Tennis player, who succeeded in the year to win in all four tournaments becomes the owner of the so-called "Grand Slam". They were Australians.

In Russia, tennis started to develop in the second half of the 70s and early 80s of last century. Before the revolution, tennis was primarily a game of aristocrats and the bourgeoisie. Under Soviet rule, it is available to all workers in our country.
