Toronto  is the provincial capital of Ontario, and the largest city in Canada. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. As Canada's economic capital, Toronto is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities study group and is one of the top financial centres in the world.

Generally considered the financial capital of Canada, Toronto has a high concentration of banks and brokerage firms on Bay Street, in the Financial District. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the world's eighth-largest stock exchange by market capitalization. All the Big Five banks of Canada are headquartered in Toronto, as are a majority of Canada's corporations.

The Mayor of Toronto is elected by direct popular vote to serve as the chief executive of the city. The mayor and members of the city council serve four-year terms without term limits.
