Why did the UN decide to “partition” this land in 1947? A movement called “Zionism” became active in Europe in the late 1800s. Zionism--the desire to create a Jewish homeland called Israel in “British Palestine” The Zionist movement gains momentum as Jews feel that there is no place in the world for them; thus, a Jewish homeland called Israel should be created.
