   Alex Ovechkin was born on September 17, 1985.
   Alex Ovechkin was born on September 17, 1985.
   He is the son of Mikhail Ovechkin, a former professional soccer player and Tatyana Ovechkin, who won 2 Olympic gold medals with the Russian womens basketball team. The first sign of Alex's future in hockey came when he was 2 years old in a toy store in Moscow when he picked up a toy hockey stick and wouldn't let it go. Sergei, Ovechkin's older brother, had initially introduced him to hockey, and Alex moved into a hockey school at the age of 8. Sergei later died in a car accident when Alex was 10. A childhood friend of Alex's claims that this is one of the reasons Ovechkin is so passionate on the ice. Alex also has another older brother named Mikhail.
