General Information The Republican Party also commonly known as the GOP (i.e. Grand Old Party). It is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the US. It was founded by anti-slavery activists in 1854. 18 presidents of the US were republicans, e.g. Abraham Lincoln and George Bush.
