For a couple of weeks during the summer of 1997, he had been waiting in Columbia – Presbyterian medical centre in New York for a heart transplant. As the days passed, Glen Menderson, a big, strapping gym teacher and former college football player, grew sicker and sicker. Finally the future seemed grimly clear: unless his doctors could provide a miracle, these days would be his last. At the age of 31, he had end-stage heart failure and no reason to think a donor heart would soon be provided.
